IEEE SBE x MathWorks MATLAB Hackathon

On April 23, 2025, the IEEE Student Branch Eindhoven (SBE) partnered with MathWorks to host an MATLAB & Simulink hackathon at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). This full-day event brought together students and professionals to tackle real-world engineering challenges, hosting innovation and collaboration.

Event Overview

Held from 10:00 to 16:00, the hackathon provided participants with the opportunity to work in teams, applying their skills to solve complex problems using MATLAB and Simulink. The event was designed to accommodate all experience levels, encouraging a diverse group of participants to engage in hands-on problem-solving.

Designing a Microgrid for Mars

Microgrids are vital for providing localized power, especially in remote areas like Mars, where traditional energy infrastructure is unavailable. As an engineer stationed on Mars, your mission is to design a self-sustaining microgrid for your station, utilizing renewable energy sources and advanced storage solutions to maintain power despite the harsh Martian environment.

Agenda Highlights

  • 10:00 – Opening and Kickoff: Introduction to the day’s challenges and objectives.
  • 13:00 – Lunch Break: Networking opportunity and informal discussions among participants.
  • 16:00 – Closing and Presentations: Teams presented their solutions, showcasing creativity and technical proficiency.

Key Takeaways

The hackathon not only provided a platform for participants to enhance their technical skills but also emphasized the importance of teamwork and innovation in addressing contemporary engineering problems. By leveraging tools like MATLAB and Simulink, attendees gained practical experience in model-based design and simulation, which are crucial in today’s engineering landscape.

This event underscored the commitment of IEEE SBE and MathWorks to support the development of future engineers by providing them with the resources and opportunities to excel in their fields.
